Fact Sheet
_ 45.5 million Hispanics live in
the United States, making people of Hispanic origin the nation's
largest minority. Hispanics constitute 13.4 percent of the
nation's total population. (These estimates do not include
the 3.9 million residents of Puerto Rico.)
_ There are 10 million Hispanic
families. Of these, 63 percent include their own children
under 18 years old.
_ 28 million U.S. residents age 5
and older speak Spanish at home. Spanish speakers constitute
a ratio of more than 1-in-10 residents. Among all those who
speak Spanish, more than one-half say they also speak English
very well.
_ 50% of Hispanic-origin population
lives in California and Texas. California is home to 11.9 million
Hispanics and Texas, to 7.3 million. More than 3-in-4 Hispanics
live in seven states, which have Hispanic populations of 1 million
or more each: California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois,
Arizona and New Jersey.
_ 40% of the Hispanic-origin population
is foreign-born. More than half (52 percent) of foreign-born
Hispanics have entered the country since 1990.
_ $33,565 was the real median income
of Hispanic households in 2001, unchanged from the previous
year.
_ 46% of Hispanic-origin householders
own their homes.
_ 1.1 million were Latino veterans
of the U.S. armed forces. Another 71,000 Hispanic-origin people
were on active duty in 2001 in the United States.

_ In January 2007, there were 16 million
Hispanic users resident in the U.S. that accessed the
Internet from either home, work or at a university. Based
on these data, the U.S. Hispanic online population, which
comprises approximately one third of the total U.S. Hispanic
population, is 11 percent larger than the total online population
of Spain, and 4 percent larger than the total online population
of Mexico, Argentina and Colombia combined. Hispanic Internet
users’
online usage intensity, as measured by time spent and pages
viewed online, is comparable to that of the total Internet
population.

_ Over 200 Hispanic/Latino publications
are members of the National Association of Hispanic Publications.
Other 200 to 250 Latino periodicals also circulate in the United
States.

_There are five U.S. Hispanic TV networks (Univision, Telemundo,
Galavision, Azteca America, Telefutura and CNN en Español)
with hundreds of affiliates across the country airing up to
four Spanish-language newscasts per day. All large newswires
such as Assocciated Press, United Press International, Reuters
and Agence France Press run their Latin American services in
Spanish to serve the U.S. Hispanic news media. Additionally,
two other Hispanic newswires, Spain's international news agency
EFE and Mexico's international news agency Notimex, also serve
U.S. Hispanic news organizations in Spanish.
